Thought for the Month

In life -

it's not where you go,

it's who you travel with.

Twenty-five members and four visitors visited Downderry Lavender for our July meeting. It was an extremely hot evening and we all ‘frazzled’ in the walled garden under the setting sun, whilst Simon, the owner, talked about and selected different lavenders, explaining where they came from and how to look after them. We then went into a glasshouse where they prepare for Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows. Simon then took us to some poly-tunnels where they worked with great precision to produce new hybrids and took cuttings from their existing stock. They also dried the lavender for use in the shop. We also saw how they extracted the oil from the lavender too, finishing up by visiting the adjacent field where lavender is grown in great quantity for commercial use.

We all then adjourned to the little café where Simon’s wife served tea/coffee and cool drinks for everyone, which were very welcome. Members then asked questions about their problems with growing lavender.

Our President thanked Simon for his informative talk and for their hospitality.

Everyone returned home after a wonderful evening in such a beautiful setting.
